Literature and Empire

Focussing on Empire Writing and the Literature of Empire. The items included in Section II comprise of many different document types, including:

Travel Writing; Memoirs; Fiction; Missionary Papers; Children's Adventure Stories; Government papers; Traditional Folk Tales; Poetry;

The material addresses numerous aspects of Empire studies, including:

Missionary work; Suffrage question in the colonies; Status and rights of women in the colonies, including female circumcision; Travel writing ranging from British women during the 'Indian Mutiny' to Indian men relating their views on late nineteenth century Britain; Traditional works of Hindu culture; Indian memoirs of life in the colonial army; Traditional folk tales from Africa; Accounts of life in Africa by Africans and Europeans in the colonial period; Ex-slave accounts of their time in captivity and their life after being freed; Perceptions of empire and its peoples through children's fiction.

A strong core of documents concentrate on Africa and South Asia but there are also works addressing Australasia, Oceania, North and South America, including Canada, and the Caribbean.
